Week 4: Impossimoguls, Sohebingo, and the Polar Bear Plunge

This week was sandwiched between an Inauguration/MLK holiday spent snowboarding with the roomies and a fantastic weekend-long adventure in Atlantic City. Old Man Winter made his presence known with much of the week spent in sub-zero temperatures, but the sun's radiation helped out a bit when we checked out the slopes at Ski Liberty in Pennsylvania on Monday. To bookend the week, we dragged ourselves out to the snow-covered Jersey beaches to celebrate Soheb's birthday. We jumped all over the sand, and in and out of casinos and clubs, then subsequently defrosted ourselves in Wyndham jacuzzis, Tito's limousine, and even a rainforest. If anyone's wondering, I'd say this weekend was a success. The only thing I'd change is our luck at the tables.

fudge: Mission Statement

Welcome! You've stumbled upon our fudge presented by Philip and Jania. This is a project of ours for the New Year involving the continued and persistent publication of photographs taken by us this year. This isn’t a new or unique concept; a quick web search of ‘photo 365’ would reveal plenty of successful (and less successful) attempts. But reality tells us that taking a photo every day and posting every day would become tedious, stressful, and the opposite of fun. So we compromised.

The Rule

Take 7 pictures at any time between Monday and Sunday.
Upload ASAP, but by the following Sunday at the latest.

Our goal is to post 7 of our favorite photos for every week in 2013. A photo 52-7 project, if you will. We’ve set up our week to begin on a Monday, December 31, 2012, and will run until the last Sunday of 2013: December 29, 2013. So if we complete our goal, we will have displayed 364 of our favorite picturesque memories from 2013. We’re tentatively selecting Sunday as ‘Upload Day’ but we’ve incorporated a margin of error so that we don’t ‘fail’ if a Sunday happens to pass without the publication of 7 shots. Call it a fudge factor, and that’s 7 days. So we’d consider it a failure if 14 days pass without uploading pictures. We’d also consider it a failure if, in any particular calendar week, we don’t capture 7 moments of our life worthy of this blog.

Why Fudge?

This project is a photo journal. After thorough brainstorming to come up with a cool, unique name for our project, we shortened photo journal to ‘phoj’ which, if pronounced as intended, sounds a whole lot like ‘fudge’. So ‘fudge’ is essentially a semi-portmanteau of two morphemes followed by a misspelled respelling of the generated word to mimic a globally recognized tasty treat. The name is not unique or cool as we’d have preferred, but it is sweet, smooth, rich and creamy. And those are adjectives that describe our photo journal perfectly.

Inspiration

So what’s worthy of this blog? There is no theme, so anything goes. It will likely be filled with people we see, places we’ve been, things we like, etc. It just can’t be a photograph of another photograph. That sounds like cheating.

Tools

I have made it a New Year’s Resolution not to purchase any more cameras so hopefully this list will be the same at its conclusion. Luckily, I recently acquired a Sony Alpha A77 SLT camera that will probably be my primary weapon of choice. To best utilize my A-mount lenses, Jania will also have a Sony Alpha DSLR at her disposal. We’ll also be using: a Canon Powershot S95 for compact requirements, a Nikon AW100 for active requirements, a Kodak Playsport Zx5 for waterproof requirements, and our mobile phones consisting of an iPhone 5 and a Droid Razr HD for mobile requirements. As far as Alpha lenses, we have at our disposal several Minolta lenses including a 50mm f/1.7, a 35-70mm, a 28-85mm, a 100-200mm f/4/5, and a 100-300mm; and a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. Aside from these tools, we always have our brains and our unwavering creativity.

Enjoy!
